Bringing Healthcare Closer to the Community: Highlights from the Span Medicare Medical Outreach

On 5th March 2026, Span Medicare partnered with Asifiwe International Academy to host a successful community medical outreach at the Span Medicare parking lot in Kisaasi. The outreach was organized as part of the academy’s 10th anniversary celebrations, with the shared goal of bringing essential healthcare services closer to the community.

The initiative attracted an overwhelming response from the public, with 333 individuals receiving medical services, surpassing the initial target of 250 beneficiaries. This strong turnout demonstrated the community’s need for accessible healthcare and reaffirmed Span Medicare’s commitment to improving community wellness.

Guided by our core values of professionalism, accountability, confidentiality, transparency, and efficiency, the outreach reflected our enduring motto: Serving with Compassion.

Expanding Access to Essential Healthcare

The outreach was designed to improve health outcomes by providing affordable and accessible medical services to underserved members of the Kisaasi community and surrounding areas. Through a coordinated effort involving medical professionals, partners, and community leaders, the camp provided a wide range of services including:

  • Medical consultations
  • Eye check-ups
  • Cancer screening
  • Sickle cell screening
  • HIV testing and counseling
  • Blood sugar testing
  • Dental check-ups
  • Family planning services
  • Immunizations
  • Tuberculosis screening
  • Blood donation
  • Subsidized ultrasound scans
  • Free medication

Community Participation and Health Insights

A total of 333 community members were registered and attended the outreach. Participation included 163 males and 170 females, covering a wide age range from infants to elderly individuals.

Health screenings revealed important insights about community health. For example:

  • 22 individuals were identified with high blood pressure, highlighting the growing burden of hypertension.
  • 270 individuals were screened for tuberculosis, demonstrating the importance of early detection and prevention.
  • 101 people received HIV tests, with two positive cases identified and successfully linked to care.
  • 72 individuals underwent random blood sugar testing, where one case of high blood sugar was detected and referred for further management.

These screenings allowed medical teams to identify underlying conditions early and guide patients toward appropriate care.

Raising Awareness Through Preventive Screening

Preventive health education played a key role during the outreach, particularly in areas such as sickle cell disease awareness. A total of 90 individuals were screened, with 22 identified as carriers of the sickle cell trait (AS) and 68 confirmed with the normal gene (AA).

The screening revealed that many participants had limited prior knowledge about the condition. As a result, the outreach served as an important platform to educate community members, especially young adults, about genetic health and the importance of testing before starting families.

Dental health services were also provided, where 53 individuals underwent dental screening. Common recommended procedures included extractions, fillings, root canal treatments, and scaling and polishing. These services highlighted the importance of oral health as part of overall wellness.

Additional Health Services That Made a Difference

Beyond consultations and screenings, the outreach offered several supportive services that directly benefited the community:

  • 66 individuals received eye check-ups, with 46 receiving free reading glasses
  • 31 units of blood were donated, supporting lifesaving transfusion services
  • 58 individuals received immunizations, including polio vaccines and deworming medication
  • 214 patients received free medications

Strengthening Partnerships for Greater Impact

One of the key strengths of this outreach was collaboration. Span Medicare worked alongside multiple partners, including Asifiwe International Academy, Raising Hope International, Laboratory World, Micro Labs Ltd, Biomed Devices, Salud Pharma Ltd, Nakasero Blood Bank, and UPMB.

Local leaders, Village Health Teams (VHTs), and community mobilizers also played a critical role in ensuring that community members were informed and able to access the services.

These partnerships demonstrate how collective efforts can significantly expand access to healthcare and promote healthier communities.

Promoting Wellness as a Brand

At Span Medicare, healthcare goes beyond treating illness—it is about promoting wellness as a lifestyle. Community outreach programs such as this are part of our broader mission to ensure that quality healthcare remains accessible to everyone.

By combining medical expertise, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, we continue to strengthen our role as a trusted healthcare provider dedicated to preventive care, early diagnosis, and compassionate treatment.

A Lasting Community Impact

The success of this medical outreach reflects the powerful impact that community-centered healthcare can have. With 333 individuals served, numerous conditions detected early, and increased health awareness among participants, the outreach delivered tangible benefits to the community.
