Span Medicare's Dental Outreach at St. Peter's COU Health Centre III , Annual Health Camp

Span Medicare participated in the Annual Health Camp hosted by St. Peter’s Church of Uganda (COU) Health Centre III on 27th–28th August 2026. This initiative brought a range of community health services to the surrounding population, with Span Medicare’s contribution focused specifically on Dental Health Education, screening, extraction services, and referral for continued care.

This outreach reflects Span Medicare’s institutional commitment to its guiding principle  Serving with Compassion and to the core values that underpin all of our service delivery, efficiency, transparency, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Objectives of Participation

Span Medicare’s involvement in the camp was structured around the following objectives:

  1. Promote oral hygiene education and general dental health awareness within the community.
  2. Provide free dental screening services to community members.
  3. Provide free tooth extraction services to eligible clients.
  4. Identify dental conditions requiring further management and advise clients accordingly.
  5. Provide subsidized follow-up dental care at Span Medicare.
  6. Facilitate appropriate referrals for dental and other identified health conditions.
  7. Strengthen community outreach, partnerships, and referral networks.
  8. Increase awareness of Span Medicare’s healthcare services within the surrounding community.

Summary of Activity

Over the course of the two-day camp, Span Medicare’s dental team attended to 114 clients, comprising 51 clients on Day 1 and 63 clients on Day 2. A total of 38 tooth extractions were performed. 13 on Day 1, and 25 on Day 2 which addressed acute dental needs identified during screening.

In addition, the clinical assessment identified 40 dental treatment needs requiring follow-up management, including fillings, scaling and polishing, and other recommended procedures.

Clients identified as requiring further treatment were issued referral slips entitling them to a 50% discount on follow-up dental procedures at Span Medicare, establishing a documented pathway for continuity of care beyond the camp setting.

Clinical and Community Impact

The outreach achieved measurable outcomes across both clinical and community dimensions:

  • Increased community awareness of oral hygiene and preventive dental care practices.
  • Provision of dental attention and/or screening to 114 clients over the two-day period.
  • Resolution of acute dental pain for 38 clients through extraction services.
  • Establishment of a subsidized referral mechanism to support continuity of care.
  • Strengthened relationships with faith-based organizations, Village Health Teams (VHTs), and local leaders involved in community mobilization.

These outcomes were made possible through adherence to Span Medicare’s core operating values. Professionalism governed every clinical interaction, from screening through extraction. Transparency ensured that clients were given a clear account of their dental condition and the treatment options available to them. Confidentiality was maintained in the handling of all client information and records. Efficiency was reflected in the throughput achieved across both days, particularly the increased client volume and extraction count observed on Day 2.

Conclusion

Span Medicare’s two-day participation in the St. Peter’s Church of Uganda Health Centre III Annual Health Camp constituted a structured and measurable community health intervention. The activity addressed immediate dental care needs, expanded community awareness of oral health, and established a documented framework for continuity of care through referral and subsidized treatment mechanisms. Span Medicare will continue to apply the lessons from this activity to strengthen the effectiveness of future outreach initiatives, in keeping with our commitment to efficiency, transparency, professionalism, and confidentiality in all aspects of care delivery.
