Span Medicare

UMA Health Camp

Free immunization and family planning at the UMA Trade Fair Grounds

On 7th and 8th October 2026, SPAN Medicare took part for the first time in the annual health camp at the UMA Trade Fair Grounds in Kampala. We came with a warm and simple offer: free immunization and family planning services, delivered right where people were already gathering.

This is what our mission looks like in practice: to deliver excellent and comprehensive health services that are patient-centered, timely, and affordable. And it moves us toward our vision of being a quality and holistic health provider, trusted for excellence and compassion.

A quiet start, then a surge

The wider health camp ran from 2nd to 11th October. On our first day, we served 20 clients: 18 received immunization and two received family planning services. On the second day, we served 224 clients, of whom 221 received immunization and three received family planning services.

Across both days, our team served 244 people:

  • 239 received immunization
  • 5 received family planning services

Wellness begins before illness

Immunization protects families from preventable disease. Family planning supports informed choices about reproductive health. Both are about caring for people’s wellbeing early, which is the heart of SPAN as a wellness brand and as a community-centred one. Instead of waiting for people to come to us, we went to them.

Our values in action

Professionalism was evident in the diligent work of our health workers across both days. Efficiency meant serving a sharp rise in clients on Day Two while keeping clear records of who was served and with what service. Confidentiality is especially important in family planning, where every client deserves privacy and respect. Transparency is the lesson we took home: many visitors did not realise free medical services were available, so we want to be even clearer about what we offer and that it is free.

What we learned

Even a busy venue needs clear communication. Footfall alone does not guarantee that people know where services are or what they cost. We value that honest observation because it helps us serve better.

The way forward

For future camps, we plan to:

  • Strengthen publicity before and during the event
  • Place mobilizers at entrances to guide visitors to our service points
  • Use clear signage showing the services offered and that they are free
  • Keep accurate daily records of clients, services, referrals and commodities
  • Hold a team review after each activity to capture lessons

Our sincere thanks go to Rotary Club Uptown for the invitation, the UMA Trade Fair Grounds organisers for hosting us, SPAN Medicare management for making our staff available, and the health workers who served so diligently.
